NGC graded, serialized and encapsulated bronze AE20
from ancient Nabataea, a kingdom and important trade route and hub
in what is now Jordan. It is most famous in modern times for its rock
carved city of Petra.
Minted by King Aretas IV sometime after 16 AD until his death in 40 AD.
Aretas IV reigned from 9 BC until 40 AD. He gave his daughter Phasaelis in marriage
to his neighbour in Judea, King Herod Antipas.  When Herod divorced her to marry his brother’s
wife Herodias (which sparked the beheading of John the Baptist), an angry Aretas waged war
on Herod. He defeated his army and captured lands on the west bank of Jordan river and Qumran.
Herod beseeched Roman Emperor Tiberius to intervene, but before Tiberius’ troops could arrive
the Emperor
died and the invasion of Nabataea was called off.
Obverse shows the jugated busts of Aretas IV and his second Queen, Shaqilat.
She only appeared on his coins after 16 AD.
Reverse shows 2 crossed cornucopiae.
A nice example of this coin type.
Authenticated by the NGC, it was given the grade “
VERY
FINE
” with a
4/5 for Strike
and a
3/5 for Surface
.
